Characters typically use combat-heavy methods to deal with him, rather than making the effort to connect with him on a deeper emotional level. It's unfortunate that the Hulk's history is filled with rejection and conflict with his fellow superheroes. Even the Hulk's very first encounter with the Fantastic Four resulted in a raucous brawl. He famously quit the original Avengers team in the second issue due to their animosity towards him. The Hulk has always had a somewhat uneasy relationship with the other Marvel superheroes. Pak and Romita Jr.'s blockbuster event works so well because it truly feels like the culmination of everything that came before. Blaming the so-called heroes who originally exiled him, a vengeful Hulk and his remaining allies head towards Earth, igniting World War Hulk. But just as the Hulk gets everything he ever wanted, ruling Sakaar alongside his new wife, his spaceship seemingly malfunctions, with the resulting explosion killing everyone in the planet's capital city except the gamma-powered behemoth himself. He crashed on the planet Sakaar, where he built a new life for himself. In the preceding storyline, Planet Hulk, Mister Fantastic, Iron Man, Black Bolt and Doctor Strange lured the Jade Giant into a spaceship that propeled him into outer space.

Simultaneously humorous, poignant, and impossible to put down, this is the story of a girl who must summon the strength to save her family, her social life and-hardest of all-herself. Then there’s Francesca’s mother, who always thinks she knows what’s best for Francesca-until she is suddenly stricken with acute depression, leaving Francesca lost, alone, and without an inkling of who she really is. The boys are no better, from Thomas, who specializes in musical burping, to Will, the perpetually frowning, smug moron that Francesca can’t seem to stop thinking about. Her only female companions are an ultra-feminist, a rumored slut, and an impossibly dorky accordion player. Sebastian’s, a boys’ school that pretends it’s coed by giving the girls their own bathroom. A compelling story of romance, family, and friendship with humor and heart, perfect for fans of Stephanie Perkins and Lauren Myracle.įrancesca is stuck at St. I didn’t dislike it as much as some reviewers, but I definitely found it problematic in areas. When I saw some less-than-enthusiastic reviews, I got a little worried, but I gave it a shot anyway. I hadn’t heard anything about it, but the summary sounded fun enough and the author seemed humorous, so I figured it was worth a shot, especially since I feel like I read a lot less paranormal books lately. This book was first on my radar when I was reading a bunch of reviews with 2014 debut authors and liked the one with Michelle Krys, the author of the debut Hexed. Suddenly forced into a centuries-old war between witches and sorcerers, Indie’s about to uncover the many dark truths about her life-and a future unlike any she ever imagined on top of the cheer pyramid. And that’s seriously bad news for Indie, because according to Bishop, she’s a witch too. If she doesn’t get the Bible back, every witch on the planet will die. But it’s when a frustratingly sexy stranger named Bishop enters Indie’s world that she learns her destiny involves a lot more than pom-poms and parties. And the dusty old family Bible her mom is freakishly possessive of is stolen. Sure, her quirky mom owns an occult shop, and a nerd just won’t stop trying to be her friend, but Indie is a popular cheerleader with a football-star boyfriend and a social circle powerful enough to ruin everyone at school. If high school is all about social status, Indigo Blackwood has it made. Hold for a moment or two Fade out and cut all FX Slowly, as if agonisingly, fade in day. Perfect in and out of the classroom as well as for theatrical performance, this faithful translation succeeds like no other. Medea What is the use of living Come thunder, come lightning of the sky, come and crash upon my head I cannot stand the pain Hades, come Come Hades and cut down this miserable life of mine Crescendo of thunder and lightning. Stallings examines the complex and multifaceted Medea in patriarchal ancient Greece. An introduction by classicist and poet A.E. In this stunning translation, poet Charles Martin captures the rhythms of Euripides’ original text through contemporary rhyme and meter that speak directly to modern readers. At its center is Medea herself, a character who refuses definition: Is she a hero, a witch, a psychopath, a goddess? All that can be said for certain is that she is a woman who has loved, has suffered, and will stop at nothing for vengeance. A barbarian woman brought to Corinth and there abandoned by her Greek husband, Medea seeks vengeance on Jason and is willing to strike out against his new wife and family-even slaughtering the sons she has born him. edition of Euripides David Kovacs gives us a freshly edited Greek text of three plays and an accurate and graceful translation with explanatory notes. Renowned poet and acclaimed translator Charles Martin faithfully captures Euripides’s dramatic tone and style in this searing tale of revenge and sacrifice. The Medea of Euripides is one of the greatest of all Greek tragedies and arguably the one with the most significance today. “Rip Van Winkle” borrows much of its content from Dutch folklore and other mythologies. He continued writing and keeping up with correspondence until his death in 1859. Later in his life he moved back to Tarrytown New York, and lived on an estate he named “Sunnyside.” He left this estate to serve as the US ambassador to Spain for four years before returning. He spent 17 years living in Europe (primarily Britain and Spain) and was well regarded abroad. His writing eventually earned him fame and status, and he was one of the first American authors whose writings received international recognition. Irving studied law before becoming interested in historical writing and short fiction. He is most famous for his short stories “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Irving was born in New York and was named after General George Washington (who hadn’t yet been elected President at the time of Irving’s birth, as the Constitution had not been either written or ratified by 1783). Washington Irving was a fiction writer, biographer, historian, essayist and US ambassador who worked during the first half of the 19th century. On the road Davian encounters the strange, scarred Gifted Taeris Sarr, who three years ago saved his life (Davian doesn’t remember the incident) and supposedly was executed for his pains. The next morning Asha wakes to a nightmare of her own. Ilseth Tenvar, a seemingly sympathetic Elder, gives Davian a mysterious magic box to guide his progress. Wirr believes Davian’s an Augur whose higher-order magic blocks his ability to channel Essence, and he insists on joining him. Though an excellent student, Davian cannot use Essence and faces a cruel exile. At a school-cum-sanctuary-cum-prison for the Gifted, three 16-year-old friends, Davian, Wirr, and Asha, face their final tests. Their servants, the Gifted, whose lesser magic derives from Essence (Islington has an irritating habit of capitalizing things), were forcibly constrained to obey the Four Tenets, meaning they can no longer use their magic to cause harm even in self-defense. Twenty years ago, a war swept away and annihilated the tyrannical Augurs when their formidable magic inexplicably faltered. The details that give this ingeniously plotted yarn its backbone emerge gradually-and are not always entirely clear. This doorstopper epic fantasy and trilogy opener was originally self-published in 2014. "A straight-up Marvel Comics-style action drama. “ An absolute page-turner."”- Publishers Weekly They are the closest thing to heroes in these dark (literally and metaphorically) times. We can't do much, but we can make our little sacrifices, and ought to do it gladly. Nobody spoke for a minute then Meg said in an altered tone, You know the reason Mother proposed not having any presents this Christmas was because it is going to be a hard winter for everyone and she thinks we ought not to spend money for pleasure, when our men are suffering so in the army. She didn't say perhaps never, but each silently added it, thinking of Father far away, where the fighting was. The four young faces on which the firelight shone brightened at the cheerful words, but darkened again as Jo said sadly, We haven't got Father, and shall not have him for a long time. We've got Father and Mother, and each other, said Beth contentedly from her corner. I don't think it's fair for some girls to have plenty of pretty things, and other girls nothing at all, added little Amy, with an injured sniff. It's so dreadful to be poor! sighed Meg, looking down at her old dress. Christmas won't be Christmas without any presents, grumbled Jo, lying on the rug. For sure if I had chosen to write something in Victorian times it would have been a different matter and the storyline would have to reflect the reality of everyday life.Įlin: The Hun and the General was, famously, inspired by a fan begging you to write a novel with Attila the Hun as a submissive in a D/s relationship. It’s easy to forget that sexual prudishness is quite recent when the history of man is considered. I rather think The Hun and The General takes place at a time when the attitude to sexuality was more liberal than in subsequent eras, so maybe I got off lightly. Tristram: I’m not sure with just one historical under my belt I’m entirely qualified to answer that, Elin. But down to business! What is the biggest difference between writing contemporary erotica, with the current anything goes atmosphere, and writing historical subjects? Do you find the strictures of the past inhibiting to your storylines? Tristram: Well, thank you for inviting me over and congratulations on your book, Alike as Two Bees.Įlin: Thanks, Tristram. Thank you, Tristram, for agreeing to answer my questions today. His first historical “The Hun and the General” hasn’t failed to deliver the goods. His first contemporary story “On My Knees” has been lauded to the skies, as have his follow up tales, “Fixed” and “Lorenzo the Magnificent”. My guest today is Tristram La Roche, rapidly becoming the ‘go to’ man for raunchy gay erotica in both contemporary and historical genres. They’ve been together for three years but just haven’t hit the successes they were hoping for. The band known as the Five are on their last legs. The plot, on the surface at least, is fairly straight-forward. The novel is a confection, a thing made up of many parts – just like the band featured in the story, and you can’t separate one of them without causing all the others to fall to pieces. I’m not sure where I’d categorize this one because the story offers mystery, suspense, and more than a hint of fantasy dipped in horror. Notice that I didn’t say what genre the book reflects. It is hands down the most gripping novel I’ve read so far this year. Robert McCammon’s The Five took me by the throat and wouldn’t let me go until I’d turned the final page. |
